The HK prize was launched by the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine to recognise excellence in medical research by young Fellows. The award is open to Fellows who have received their Academy Fellowship within the past 10 years and whose research work has been published in a peer-reviewed journal.
In a move to boost the number of top-class runners for next year’s BMW Hong Kong Derby and four-year-old classic races, the Club has increased PP bonuses by 8 percent to HK$950,000 per race. The bonuses are awarded for the winners and runners-up of Class 2 and Class 3 races, and those for the first six places in a class at 1600m or further.
During the protests in Hong Kong last year, police officers were often attacked and even injured by anti-government activists from the mainland. At the same time, public facilities like subway stations, traffic lights and street lamps were vandalized. This caused great distress to residents and tourists from the mainland, who were also worried about their safety.
The 2021 Pulitzer Prize in Breaking News Photography was awarded to Reuters for a series of photos that showed Chinese people who were not involved in the protests being beaten by anti-government rioters. The photo series, titled The Bleeding Man, was taken at the Mong Kok area of Hong Kong. It was one of the most controversial photos of the award-winning series, and triggered intense criticism on social media platforms including Sina Weibo.
John Lee Ka-chiu, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, congratulated the Yidan Prize laureates online and said that the HKSAR government will continue to make efforts to create a better world through education. He said the bright ideas and dedication of the laureates will help reshape the future of education in the world.
BOCHK SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION PRIZE is a merit-based award sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited. It aims to reward outstanding scientists and research teams from Hong Kong or research-related institutions set up by Hong Kong higher education institutions in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, for their significant scientific and technological innovation and transformation.
The awards are presented at the Yidan Prize Awards Ceremony, which will be held on 9 December. The award winners will be invited to the event as speakers and guests.
The winner of the HK Global Development Prize is Professor Peter Sarnak, Eugene Higgins Professor of Mathematics at Princeton University. He is honoured for his discoveries in the areas of number theory, arithmetic geometry, combinatorics and dynamical systems. His research has opened up new avenues of scientific possibility and has greatly benefited human knowledge. He was lauded by the judges for his contributions to our daily lives and the advancement of science. This is the second time that he has won the award.
