The Sidney Prize is awarded monthly to an outstanding piece of journalism that exposes social and economic injustices. Nominations are made by the public and are due the last day of each month. A winner is announced on the second Wednesday of each month. The Sidney prize is named after a former member of the Trent History Department and Master of Lady Eaton College. The Prize is based on the belief that good writing can change the world for the better.
The 2024 Sydney Taylor Book Award was presented at the Society of Biblical Literature’s Triennial Council meeting in Portland, Oregon. The winning book is chosen by a committee and honored in memory of Sydney Taylor, an outstanding author of Jewish children’s books who died in 1993. The book should have universal appeal and reveal positive aspects of Jewish life. The winner receives a $500 cash prize and the title is published by Follett. All nominated books receive a free Sydney Taylor Shmooze seal, which can be displayed on their covers.
Founded by Miss A.M. Ardern in honor of her brother, the Philip Sidney Black Memorial Engineering Award is awarded annually to a female student who has passed her BEng on any of UHI’s engineering programmes and who has shown either academic achievement or personal attributes, or contribution to society/student life. The prize is worth PS500 and has been designed to encourage women into engineering by demonstrating the success that can be achieved by hard work.
The Sidney Hillman Foundation is a left-of-center organization that awards monetary prizes to journalists, writers and public figures who pursue social justice and public policy for the common good. The Hillman Foundation is funded by the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, which was part of a series of mergers between labor unions that ended with Workers United, a successor to Unite Here and SEIU. Bruce Raynor, the president emeritus of Unite Here and a former member of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers, leads the foundation, which also is supported by left-leaning celebrities such as Danny Glover.
AJL is pleased to present the Sidney Taylor Manuscript Award to encourage aspiring authors of Jewish children’s fiction. The prize was established in memory of Sydney Taylor, whose All-of-a-Kind Family stories launched her career as an author. This manuscript competition, with its cash prize and national publicity, is meant to help launch many new authors of distinguished quality.
The Sydney Brenner Medal, named in memory of the Academy’s founding members, honors a scholar for national distinction in scholarship, undergraduate teaching and leadership in the cause of liberal arts education. The award is made to an individual and will be announced at the Society’s Triennial Council meeting. AJL will solicit nominations for this award about a year and a half prior to each Triennial Council in the Key Reporter and the General Newsletter. Nominations are reviewed by a Committee of Fellows and awarded in accordance with the Bylaws of the Society.
