Public swimming pools are part of the fabric of Australia’s cities and suburbs, embodying values like equality, diversity, and mateship. But, according to a new report, they’re not always accessible for everyone. The report, by a group called Australia for Everyone, found that while swimming pools are universally cherished, they aren’t necessarily available to everyone. It’s time to change that.
Zoe Baker learned to appreciate the simple charms of Sydney’s public pools on childhood trips to the nearby Granville Swimming Centre, a basic big blue rectangle with patches of grass and concrete on which to roll out a towel. “You don’t need all the bells and whistles,” she says. “It’s just a lovely way to spend your day. I think that’s why people love them so much.”
Today, every inner-city public pool is a wonder in its own right. Some, like Prince Alfred Park Pool, are architectural miracles built into a hill – a swimming oasis for hobbits. Others, such as North Sydney Olympic Pool, are a dazzlingly photogenic scene for endless Instagram photos of toned men in Speedos and the Harbour Bridge towering above them like CGI hallucination. And then there are those, like Andrew Boy Charlton Pool, plonked in the middle of the botanical gardens and decked out to look more like a resort than an urban swimming hole.
Many of these pools are also heritage-listed and, like the one at Granville, need urgent renovations to repair leaky roofs, eroded concrete, and outdated filtration systems. The report found that while some councils have put in funding for these improvements, many haven’t. The Australian Greens’ deputy leader, Larissa Waters, said that while the report’s findings were “shocking”, her party was committed to improving access to public swimming pools.
