In order to perpetuate in a small way the generative influence which Professor Sidney Cox exercised upon thousands of Dartmouth students both inside and outside his classes, a group of his friends has established an annual prize to be awarded to undergraduate writing that most nearly meets his high standards of originality and integrity.

This year, art history major Sophia Jactel won the prize for her paper on Josef Israels’ The Smoker as a Symbol of Peasant Culture and the Home in Nineteenth-Century Holland. Her work was supervised by Professor Sally Cornelison and contributed to our recent exhibition Domesticities.

The Sydney Prize for the History of Technology is awarded annually by the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT) to a student or young scholar who has made outstanding contributions to the field of the history of technology through research, teaching, publications, service to SHOT, and/or other activities. The 2023 winner is Dr. Clare Jackson, a graduate of Sidney and a previous Junior Research Fellow who is now a Senior Tutor and Walter Grant Scott Fellow at Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge.
